Community News – Full Fibre Broadband is Coming to Pennington

Faster, more reliable internet – a step forward for our community

Pennington Parish is set to benefit from a major broadband upgrade as full fibre is rolled out across our area. This investment in digital infrastructure will bring gigabit-capable internet speeds to homes and businesses, helping futureproof our community for the demands of modern life, you can read more here: Fibrus delivering in Cumbria

What is Full Fibre?

Unlike older broadband technologies that rely on copper cables, full fibre (also known as Fibre to the Premises or FTTP) uses fibre optic cables all the way from the exchange to your home. This enables:

  • Speeds of up to 1 Gbps (1,000 Mbps) – perfect for video calls, remote work, 4K streaming, and smart home use.
  • Greater reliability – less vulnerable to signal drop-outs or weather-related issues.
  • Long-term value – fibre is built to support growing demand for decades to come.

How the Rollout Will Work: A Two-Part Process

The full fibre installation will happen in two key stages:

  • Infrastructure Installation (Underway):
You may have noticed the road closures as Fibrus are installing Telegraph poles or routing cables underground in certain areas of the parish. These are needed to carry fibre cables in places where existing poles or underground ducts are unavailable. Care is being taken to place these as sensitively as possible.
  • Property Connection (To Follow):
Once the main network is in place, fibre will be extended from the new infrastructure directly to individual homes and businesses. Residents will be contacted when their property is ready for connection, and they can then choose a broadband provider offering full fibre services in the area.

Safety and Community Concerns

We recognise that the installation of new poles may raise questions or concerns, especially around safety or positioning. If you believe a pole has been installed too close to a road, obstructs a driveway, or poses a safety issue, please reach out to our Broadband Champion (cllr.kim.squires@pennington-pc.gov.uk). They will work with the installation team to investigate the issue.

Once the poles have been installed, you do have the right to raise an objection if you believe the apparatus materially damages your enjoyment of, or interest in, the land to which the objection is made. Any interest in that land is capable of being prejudiced by the apparatus.

The works are expected to complete in early 2026, though for some properties it may be earlier.
